A Message from Leadership - Year Review

Dear Members and Friends of the Chatham Conservation Foundation,

As we reflect on the past year, we’re thrilled to share the incredible progress we’ve made together in conservation, community engagement, and stewardship. Thanks to your ongoing support, the Chatham Conservation Foundation (CCF) continues to strengthen its impact and expand its reach through public programming, strategic partnerships, and thoughtful planning for the future.

New Acquisition

In December 2024, CCF was fortunate to acquire 1.7 acres of undeveloped waterfront land along Muddy Creek, adding to the 32 acres it already owns along the estuary, as well as 5 additional acres protected by conservation restrictions. These ongoing efforts to conserve open space help protect water quality in the embayment and support the long-term health of wildlife habitats.

Increased Capacity Thanks to the Generosity of an Anonymous Donor

At the very end of our last fiscal year we were delighted and surprised by a generous gift from a long-time donor wishing to honor her mother anonymously. After careful thought and discussion with the donor and our trustees, it was determined that we would invest much of the funds for future projects, including future acquisitions, and carve out a small salary to hire a land steward technician who could help increase our ‘boots on the ground’ capacity, assisting with restorations, monitoring and documenting our 200+ properties.

Connecting People to Nature: Programs & Outreach

In 2024–2025, CCF hosted over 60 public programs with more than 1,500 participants, creating opportunities for residents and visitors alike to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of Chatham.

  • Guided Walks drew 200+ participants across 14 events.

  • Our Winter Webinar Series (February–March) attracted 250+ attendees.

  • During Earth Week 2025, we partnered with more than 25 local organizations, houses of worship, and businesses. Over 300 people participated in activities including:

    • A keynote lecture by Andrew Gottlieb (APCC) on local water quality

    • A town-wide cleanup spanning 23 miles of roadside and 8 public beaches and landings

    • Educational events for all ages, including nature films and guided walks

Throughout the year, we also welcomed ~540 visitors for tours at the Mayo House and connected with hundreds more through community events like the CCF Environmental Fair, Chatham Airport Open House, Farmers Market, and Brewster Conservation Day.

Collaboration in Action: Frost Fish Creek Restoration

In partnership with the town, regional and local conservation groups, this initiative will enhance habitat for native wildlife, improve water quality, and increase climate resilience. This type of cross-sector collaboration represents a promising model for future projects and demonstrates the power of shared environmental stewardship.

Looking Ahead: Shaped by Your Input

This spring, we conducted a member survey to help shape CCF’s future direction. Your feedback has been instrumental in informing our evolving strategic plan.

Primary Focus Areas Moving Forward

  1. Habitat Restoration – Vital to strengthening ecosystem health.

  2. Species & Habitat Stewardship – Emphasizing the need to manage and monitor sensitive habitats and rare species.

  3. Land Acquisition – Once again identified as the top priority by members.

Emerging Priorities

  • Strengthening partnerships with local environmental organizations

  • Addressing the impacts of climate change on conserved lands

  • Broadening visibility and public engagement through advocacy and outreach

Your commitment to our mission continues to inspire us. Whether through attending a walk, joining a cleanup, sharing your expertise, or voicing your priorities in our survey, you are helping shape a more resilient and biodiverse Chatham.

Thank you for walking with us on this journey.
